In Fall 2016, faculty in the School of Education will engage in conversations about M.Ed. and M.S. requirements at both the SOE and Division levels. Until the outcomes of those discussions are known, all faculty and students need clarity about degree requirements. This memo is meant to clarify those requirements that are at the SOE level. Notably, most M.Ed. and M.S. decisions reside at the Division and Area levels. Please see the memo specific to your Division for your Division level requirements and see your Area’s web page for Area requirements that are in addition to the SOE and Division requirements.
The only requirements at the School of Education level are about the size and composition of M.Ed. and M.S. Program of Study Committees.
All M.Ed. students not in a coursework only program are required to have at least two faculty members on their committee, one of whom must be from within the Area. Faculty members must be designated by the Graduate School as having graduate faculty status.
All M.S. students are required to have at least three faculty members on their committee, two of whom must be from within the Area and one of whom must be from outside the Area, which means from another Area inside the SOE or from a unit outside the SOE. Faculty members must be designated by the Graduate School as having graduate faculty status.
The above requirements apply to all students who start their degree prior to the approval of new SOE requirements. This means that if the SOE approves new requirements in Fall 2016, those new requirements would go into effect for all students who start their degree in Spring 2017. In other words, you are bound by the requirements that exist at the time of your start date.
If you have any questions about these requirements, please email Anne Foegen, Director of Graduate Education.
