I conduct research on assessment tools to monitor student progress in mathematics. Although my research in this area has spanned early numeracy (K-1) and middle grades (6-8), my current work explores the development and implementation of measures for beginning algebra. I have directed three federal grants supporting this work. My current project is a collaborative effort with mathematics education colleagues at the University of Missouri and involves refining existing procedural measures and developing new conceptual measures of algebra competence. Teachers and students in three states are involved in the work, with current efforts focused on weekly progress monitoring to gauge changes in algebra performance across the duration of a course. I have served on the author panels for two IES practice guides related to mathematics, Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and Middle Schools), and the forthcoming Teaching Algebra to Middle and High School Students (working title).
