- Transition issues for youth with emotional or behavioral disorders
- Legal and policy issues in special education
- Postschool outcomes for youth with disabilities
As a former high school special educator, I was passionate about my students' successful transition from school to work, postsecondary education, and independent living. The legal components of postsecondary transition were interesting to me as a practitioner, but I understood the quality of the postsecondary transition planning and services was much more critical to successful postschool outcomes. As a doctoral student, I began examining court rulings across the country related postsecondary transition, thus beginning my work in the field of legal and policy issues in special education.
My research extends to outcomes youth with disabilities experience following their exit from public high schools. Based on survey data that states are required to collect under the Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2004, I am interested to know what variables will most likely impact their likelihood of employment and/or postsecondary education and training. By examining the impact that school and district policies may have on these outcomes, we can improve the educational experiences for all our students.
