Requirements

The following are the ISU Educator Preparation Program admissions requirements for those who:

Department requirements? Departments may have higher eligibility requirements for admissions (see the licensure area coordinator).

  • A minimum 2.5 cumulative grade-point-average (GPA).
  • Completion of 9 credits at ISU.
  • Praxis I (Core) scores with a minimum of 156 in Reading, 162 in Writing, and 150 in Mathematics.
  • Documented completion of ISU-approved 10 hours of pre-student teaching field experience.
  • Curriculum and Instruction (C I), Human Development and Family Studies (HD FS), and Special Education (Sp Ed) courses required for licensure have a minimum grade requirement of a C (pedagogy coursework).
  • Major department courses required for teacher licensure have a minimum grade requirement of a C- (content coursework). (This is for the courses taken from Fall 2007 forward.)
  • An acceptable Iowa criminal background check report initiated by ISU’s recommending official.
  • E-portfolio contains a minimum of one graded artifact (that received a proficient rating).

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) from that institution.
  • Completion of 9 credits at ISU.
  • Successful completion of oneof the following basic skills tests:Documented completion of ISU-approved 10 hours of pre-student teaching field experience.
    • Acceptable GRE scores with a minimum score of 400 on each of the verbal and quantitative sections, or a minimum of 146 for Verbal and 144 for Quantitative on the GRE revised General Test.
    • A Praxis I (Core) scores with a minimum of 156 in Reading, 162 in Writing, and 150 in Mathematics.
  • All Curriculum and Instruction (C I), Human Development and Family Studies (HD FS), and Special Education (Sp Ed) courses required for licensure have a minimum grade requirement of a C (pedagogy coursework).

  • Full admission to an appropriate master’s degree program.
  • Completion of 9 credits at ISU.
  • Successful completion of one of the following basic skills tests (as determined by the department):Documented completion of ISU-approved 10 hours of pre-student teaching field experience.

Subsequent background/status issues

Full admission to the ISU Educator Preparation Program does not guarantee that you will receive a teaching license. Any serious criminal charges or breach of ethics – before or after admission to the program – could preclude you from becoming a licensed teacher.
