The city of Schwabisch Gmund is a college town, about the size of Ames, IA, but that is about all that these two cities have in common. Located in western Germany, not far from Stuttgart and the scenic Black Forest region, Schwabisch Gmund sits on the edge of two converging rivers. It offers a large, bustling, pedestrian shopping zone in the city center that is surrounded by a mix of modern architecture and lovely old stone buildings. A wide range of restaurants are scattered throughout and Saturdays are reserved for their large and varied open market. With easy access to the Banhoff- their train station – you would have unlimited weekend travel opportunities with numerous country-wide routes departing daily. Students live in an apartment or a vacation rental by owner (VRBO), and commute by train daily to schools. With Padagogische Hochschule (PH) as our hosting university partner, leveled German language classes are part of the experience. PH also offers a range of evening and weekend outings with international students that you are welcomed and encouraged to participate in. This site is only offered in the fall, but who doesn't want to experience Germany during Octoberfest?!
