Switching majors leads Teri Jo Lane toward future as teacher and coach
Teri Jo Lane initially came to Iowa State University to study animal science, but soon realized that her true interests were in a different field: elementary education.
“I didn’t really find the interest that I should have had [in animal science] if that was what I wanted to do,” she said.
Teri Jo knew she needed to change her course of study. She credits her helpful advisers, as well as her family’s endless support and guidance, with helping her make the right decision in switching to elementary education.
Since she always understood and enjoyed math growing up, Teri Jo hopes to teach algebra to upper elementary school or middle school students in a small town similar to her hometown.
“I’ve always liked [algebra] because there’s an answer,” Teri Jo said. “You’re always going to get an answer, something that you have to work toward.”
In addition to teaching math, Teri Jo wants to positively impact students through coaching. She played four sports in high school, and the possibility of being a coach made the thought of teaching even more exciting. She aspires to coach softball or volleyball to instill important values such as teamwork, responsibility, and encouragement in her student athletes.
“I learned a lot of really important life mindsets to have when I played sports,” Teri Jo said. “[I want to] help them be able to realize that it’s not always about you; the team is very important.”
Teri Jo is getting a feel for a younger classroom environment through her practicum in a second grade classroom at Morris Elementary School in Bondurant, Iowa.
Since making the switch to elementary education, Teri Jo is happy with where she is now. She's thankful she made the decision to follow her true interests.
“[The decision to switch majors] made me feel a little bit more at ease,” she said. “It was important that I knew where I was going now.”
