Social and cultural studies of education emphasis, Ph.D.

The School of Education and Division of Teaching, Learning, Leadership and Policy offer a Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in social and cultural studies of education (SCS). The Ph.D. prepares educational researchers who inquire into the relationship between school and society, and education and social change. Most students in SCS also complete the School of Education graduate certificate in Education for Social Justice.

Faculty expertise includes critical approaches to social studies education, critical theories of education, cultural and linguistic diversity, history of education in the United States, multicultural and social justice education, pre-service teacher preparation in social foundations and social studies teacher education, and sociocultural theory.
