My group of American students was treated with nothing but kindness after stepping off the plane in Bergen. The teachers and students are so caring and compassionate, I got hugs everyday from the students. It was amazing to see how much the students try to connect with you and speak English with you. This experience has been so amazing and makes me appreciate what an amazing opprotinity this is.
I learned about this opprotunity from the student teaching roundup describing the program. I thought it would be an amazing opprotunity to teach abroad. We were given several options on where to go in the world ans I wanted to go to Norway to see what the amazing school systems look like.
An impact to my life...
In Norway I learned about what it was like to step in an ELL students shoes. I learned how to differentiate lessons for those students who did not understand what I was saying and be flexible in my lesson planning when things did not go according to plan. Teaching abroad was a challenge that made me go outside of my comfort zone, and has led me to appreciate and learn about different cultures in a new and exciting way. I loved learning about other cultures and the similarities and differences we share. This experience has impacted my future self by making sure I establish those relationships early on in the classroom and set the expectations for the students. In my experience I was able to connect to the students in many ways.
My most valuable learning experience...
From this experience I valued the chance to get to know these students and immerse myself in a different countries' culture. Being more culturally aware of people's lives will lead me into a better social justice leader. Everyone deserves the right to be treated with kindness and understanding. I feel that this experience has made me even more humbling. It is hard to imagine life outside of the United States until you’ve actually lived it, and this experience has shown me that we are not the only people in the world and that there is a lot to offer.
I will never forget...
My cooperating teacher went out of her way to make a student feel better and really understand the situation he is in. I admire that passion so much and that is how I want to be for my future self.
Advice for others...
There are pros and cons to every big decision, but choosing to go abroad had been a great choice. I made memories that will last a lifetime, and I would recomment studying abroad to all students.
