Learning Technologies

The Iowa State University School of Education is known for the emphasis we place on technology in the classroom. We prepare you to become fluent in current and emerging technology that will benefit students in educational settings, whether it’s using tablets in the classroom or implementing new computer programs to aid student learning. Our learning technologies minor will give you an advantage in the technology-based world of education.

Curriculum

This minor requires a minimum of 16 credits, with at least six credits taken at Iowa State University in courses numbered 300 or above. Nine credits of courses listed for this minor cannot be used to meet any other college or university requirement. Some students may need to take an additional credit of CI 280B for this requirement. The same courses may not be applied to two different minors.

EDUC 201: Educational Technologies in the PK-6 Classroom OR EDUC 202: Educational Technologies in the 7-12 Classroom

EDUC 280B: Pre-Student Teaching Experience I: Educational Technologies

EDUC 302: Principles and Practices of Learning with Technology

EDUC 407: Principles and Practices of Distance Learning

EDUC 454: Emerging Topics in Educational Technologies

In addition to the above required courses, students must select one of the following courses: 

COM S 107: Applied Computer Programming

COM S 207: Programming I

EDUC 370: Toying with Technology

Note: CI 280B requires at least two-hour blocks of time (per 1 hour of credit) in a student’s schedule, as field experiences are offered in area educational settings.

Technology Resources

Students are encouraged to use our Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching (CTLT), which is a state-of-the-art technology center for student learning, coursework, and more. In addition, the ISUEA student club offers you the opportunity to meet other students who are enrolled in the learning technologies minor.

Getting the Minor

Students seeking the learning technologies minor must: 

  1. Talk with your academic adviser: Contact your adviser and discuss your interest in the minor and choose the courses that fit your schedule/curriculum. The minor requires at least 16 credits, including at least 6 credits taken at Iowa State University in courses numbered 300 or above. The minor must include at least 9 credits that are not used to meet any other college or university requirement. The same courses may not be applied to two different minors.
  2. Fill out the form: Fill out the university request for minor form available online. This form must be signed by the student, the student’s adviser, the learning technologies minor program coordinator, and the dean of the student’s college of major.
  3. Register for a course: Registrations can be done via Accessplus. A list of the available courses in Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education for the current and next semester can be found on the ISU schedule of classes website.

Educator Preparation Program

Once you’ve been accepted to Iowa State University, our Educator Preparation Program (EPP) prepares you for recommendation to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) for licensure.
